Anyone know if there is a good tool for plotting systems with the coordinates and the possibility of making lines between them representing gates?
Ive been dreaming of a 3d gate map for ages, just doesnt know what tools could be used to make it. Would need to be something where you can put in new sytems and gates by adding the coordinates to a table, for easy maintaining. Would also need possiblity to turn it in any direction and zoom (we have too many gates :lol: ). Would be nice if we could click on a system to make it center, but thats not mandatory for this to work.

That link Davh have seems close, but missing ability to add gates and system names?

One challenge is we only have sector coords for systems. We have no coords within that sector. Makes generating a 3D map hard when we are missing a key part.

Loke,

I too wanted a 3d map with gates and the ability to assign system names for my own explorations. I found two programs that fit my needs. The first is called 3d Star Map and i used if for an overall view of the galaxy as it has a good fast rendering engine that allows me to zoom around and spin the 3d map quickly and smoothly to see the systems and how they relate to each other.

the other program i found was called 'Its Full of Stars" IFOS for short. This is a serious 3d star mapper for creating sci-fi gaming maps. It allows you to set up routed between systems so you can track gates and where they go. It is a full 3d program like 3d star Map and it also allows you to zoom into a system and set the number of planets, their type and orbits so you can represent your systems accurately. very nice program.

As to Dav statement about the mapping. It is correct that we do not get proper coordinates for each system. The sectors are each 10 light years across. So when I find a new system I use the Map in Ascent to estimate a true coordinate for each axis. Just remember to multiply the sector number by 10 and then add the internal grid coordinate from the map. for example Apollo is actually 5,5,5 in my map since it is in the middle of sector 0,0,0. Also when dealing with negative sectors you need to subtract the grid reference from the multiple of ten of the sector number. Remember sector -1,0,0 has values for X that go from 0 to -1 not -1 to -2.
