would be good to carry a smaller ship via a guardian to the space station. It would allow you to go off to other places and store ships purpose built at work sites.

Hell YES. This is a long term planned feature.

The way I see it, there is a special module called a Class X hangar. A big enough hangar can take any ship it would fit.

You can either undock from your main ship, leaving a pilot in charge of it, and fly around in your own fighter, or assign crew to fighters and have them help you with stuff.

Or maybe you have a smaller ship you mine with, and you unload the ore into a bigger ship.

This will make a lot more sense once the game has light cruisers, cruisers, heavy cruisers, battle cruisers, battle ships and dreadnoughts... Those get rather big, can fit a lot of specialised smaller ships into the kind of hangars they can fit.
